How Nigeria’s Hospitality Industry can leverage the entertainment sector

How Nigeria’s Hospitality Industry can leverage the entertainment sector

By  -  - Entertainment Must Read Vanguard ]
Hospitality has so many branches which include but not limited to music and film. To present a total hospitality package to tourists and visitors, these two must be aligned.
In Nigeria, you can arguably posit that there is yet to be a synergy between the hospitality and entertainment industry. This is a minus for both industries because the country is losing out from a major revenue loop. Although both sectors can exist independently, it will do the economy a whole lot of good if they synergise.
Let’s give more credence to this. According to Nigeria’s Hospitality Report, Travel and Tourism was directly responsible for 1.9% (N2.3 billion in actual numbers) of the country’s total GDP in 2017.
Meanwhile, a report in the Vanguard Newspaper reveals that the entertainment and creative sector contributed 2.3 per cent which was approximately N239 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP in 2016. Definitely, the numbers would have increased in 2017.
You can only imagine how much the Nigerian government will earn if both industries are synergised. In fact, more than the above-referenced figures can be earned if the government and stakeholders explore the endless gains of the hospitality and entertainment industry.
Nigeria’s Entertainment Industry
The entertainment industry has grown by leaps and bounds. Unlike in the past when Nigerians have the knack for foreign films and music, the opposite is the case now. They have embraced Nigerian films and music. The likes of Rita Dominic, Genevieve Nnaji, Pete Edochie, Funke Akindele, Wizkid, Olamide, and Davido et al are known all over the world including African countries. They are also celebrated in the country. Hence, they are ‘tools’ that can be used to push the Nigerian hospitality industry.
Interestingly, the government has recognised that the creative industry has a huge goldmine and has supported the industry with several grants.
In 2013, the government then established N200 billion (or about $1.2 billion) intervention fund for the entertainment industry. Last year, the federal government again supported the Nigerian film industry with N420m grant.
The government support has largely boosted the entertainment industry. You can observe this in the quality of videos and songs emerging from the country.
The Hospitality industry
There has really been no reported grant or fund for the hospitality industry unlike what is happening in entertainment. This is probably why the industry is laid back.
When you talk about hospitality in Nigeria, we mostly look at it from the perspective of hotels and tourist attractions-which need government attention. It is beyond this. There is food, flight, festivals, culture, film, music and much more.
The industry has infinite opportunities that only being explored by a few stakeholders and government interest is limited.
Again, quoting the Nigeria Hospitality report, the number of direct jobs created by the sector peaked at 1.2 million compared to 651,000 in 2016 (1.6%), that’s 1.8% of total employment in the country. This is estimated to rise by 4.7% by end of 2018 to approximately 1.3 million jobs (1.8% of total employment). If the government could invest in the hospitality industry, these figures will definitely increase.
How the hospitality industry can leverage the entertainment sector
Since entertainment is getting more attention from the government, it can be said that the hospitality industry will have to leverage on entertainment for the purpose of business and earn more revenue.
This said it is not rocket science to synergise both sectors to earn more revenue.
Artists and producers must recognise that there are beautiful, pleasant and awesome Nigerian destinations where they can shoot their videos. For example, we have the Obudu Cattle Ranch, the Kajuru Castle, Olumirin Waterfalls and a host of others. They do not need to visit South Africa or Dubai to shoot their movies. The more these destinations get celebrity endorsements, the more Nigerians will be interested in checking out these destinations and of course, these destinations can earn more revenue.
Furthermore, hospitality stakeholders should partner with artists so that they can endorse their hospitality spots. They do not need to pay the artists cash but they can compensate them in kind. For example, whenever, they have shows or performances, they can provide a certain number of rooms to the artistes and his backroom staff. This will translate to more bookings for the hotel.
Finally, the Nigerian tourist spots need dire attention. So, these artists can organise shows and performances at these spots. The more performances at these tourists attractions, the more they feature prominently in the media. Since the media sets the agenda, the condition of these destinations will be known to the government. They can now, in turn, develop these destinations.
Conclusion
Entertainment and Hospitality can contribute more than it is currently doing to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product. That is if it is synergised. The government have a key role to play. They have to also give the grant to the hospitality sector. However, because hospitality is yet to have the influence or impact that entertainment has, the former can leverage on the later to more revenue.

Chelsea buy world’s most expensive keeper as Courtois moves to Madrid

Chelsea are splashing a world record 80 million euro or $92m on Athletic Bilbao’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after they agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Kepa Arrizabalaga
No fee was revealed for the transfer of the Courtois, who had just one more year to run on his Chelsea contract, although Spanish media claimed that the deal is worth around 35 million euros.
Chelsea added in a statement that subject to the completion of the Courtois deal, Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic would join the Blues from Real on a season-long loan.
The English giants have been forced into finding a replacement for Courtois, 26, after he failed to report for pre-season training on Monday.
Courtois joined Chelsea from Genk in 2011, but spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid before returning to London where he won two Premier League titles in four seasons.
And with his two children still resident in the Spanish capital, Courtois’s agent claimed earlier this week family commitments were a motivating factor in forcing a move to the European champions.
“He has made it clear to the club that the best option for him is to move to Madrid,” Christophe Henrotay told the Sun newspaper.
“For him this is a big decision because he wants to be near his family, and there is an offer in place for Chelsea to accept.”
Just weeks after Liverpool broke the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper in a deal worth up to 72.5 million euros for Brazilian international Alisson Becker, the inexperienced Arrizabalaga, 23, is now set to inherit the title of the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bilbao confirmed that Arrizabalaga had paid his buyout clause at the league’s headquarters in Madrid to free him from his contract with Athletic.
Arrizabalaga has played 53 times in La Liga for Bilbao over the last two seasons, and made his international debut in a 5-0 friendly win over Costa Rica in November 2017.
He was also in the Spain squad for the World Cup in Russia as back-up to David De Gea, but has yet to make his competitive debut for Spain.
But for a late change of course due to the wishes of former Real boss Zinedine Zidane, Arrizabalaga could have joined Madrid himself in January when his buyout clause was just 20 million euros.
However, after that move collapsed, he signed a new seven-year deal with the Basque side that dramatically increased his release clause and has cost Chelsea dear.READ ALSO

France 2018: Ghana crash out as Netherlands romp to 4-0 win

Abuja – Netherlands moved to within touching distance of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 quarter-finals on Wednesday after earning a 4-0 win over Ghana.
The victory at the Stade de la Rabine in Vannes helped them to maintain their 100 per cent start in Group A.
On the other hand, it also pushed the African side out of the FIFA World Cup.
While the West Africans started brightly, it didn’t take long for the Netherlands to get into gear.
Two spurned chances could have rocked their confidence, but they didn’t have to dwell on them long, going ahead on 21 minutes.
Three goals in 11 minutes put them in complete control, with Aniek Nouwen’s downward header at the back post getting the debutants rolling after their slender win over New Zealand.
Having netted in their opener, Fenna Kalma made no mistake when put through by the Victoria Pelova, before converting with superbly taken volley to see her move joint-top of the scoring charts.
The pace dropped after the break, with the Netherlands sitting comfortably.
But Pelova and Kalma switched rolls as the duo exchanged passes before the former stroked home to add some gloss to their victory.
Ghana who lost 1-4 to hosts France in their opening game on Sunday now need a favour from New Zealand against France to keep their hopes of progression alive.
However, with two losses, Ghana’s chances of advancing to the last eight round are very slim even if they beat New Zealand in their final group game on Sunday.
In other matches played on Wednesday, Brazil drew 1-1 with England while Mexico lost 1-2 to North Korea in Group B fixtures.
In Thursday’s matches, Nigeria will face Haiti in their second Group D match while Germany take on China.
Group C matches on Thursday will see Spain taking on Japan and the U.S. facing Paraguay.(NAN)

”We Must Remove Saraki As Senate President” – Adams Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says since Senate President Bukola Saraki, has defected from the party he rode on to become the number 3 citizen in Nigeria, it will be honorable for him to resign his position as senate president.
Oshiomole made this known while speaking to state house correpsondents after a meeting with President Buhari yesterday August 1st.
According to Oshiomhole, it is a matter of honour for Saraki to leave “the crown in the family it belongs to.”
”Whatever is the reason, we can defect from the party but we can’t defect from Nigeria. The only thing is that there are other consequential issues that every man or woman of honour who had taken such decisions would be expected to follow through. I mean you should not collect a crown that belongs to a family and wear it on behalf of the family if for your personal reasons which he has enumerated that he has gone to another family. It is just a matter of honour to leave the crown in the house that the crown belongs to. As it stands even now, the APC is still the largest party in the Senate. We have 53 senators, that is much more than what the PDP has, or APGA has” he said

“THEY WILL BRING WAR TO YOUR DOOR” – Secondus To Saraki, Other Defectors

Uche Secondus, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told its new members who recently defected from the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), to get ready to fight a (political) war.
Mr. Secondus said this last night at a dinner in honour of the defectors, according to the party, said the battle to wrest power from the ruling party would be fierce as the APC would not want to relinquish power easily.
He described the defectors as courageous men and women, whom he said refused to keep quiet in the face of “flagrant disobedience of rules in the country.”
“This event is organised in honour of those who took bold steps to join others to rescue the nation.
“They are heroes. They could have chosen to remain where they were and even return to their seats (in the National Assembly), but because they could not see what is going on in the country and keep quiet; that is why they are here.
“They cannot see the killings, the frame-ups, the unemployment and the kind of military democracy that cannot even be described, that they are foisting on us and keep quiet. If we are in the military government, we would know. Rule of law and court orders are no longer obeyed
“These heroes of democracy who have decided to move from the ruling party are unusual men. We need to honour them. Their decision is in defence of democracy.
“But let remind you that we are very far from getting there. Be ready to fight both real and proxy wars.
“It is going to be a very long walk to freedom. There is no longer freedom in Nigeria. No freedom of the press. If you tell them the truth, they say it is hate speech. When you tell them the whole truth, they say it is fake news.”
He described the day the defection took place in both chambers of the National Assembly as the “days of freedom”.
He condemned the federal government for always claiming not to know what happened in the country, adding that the defections that took place in states such as Kwara, Sokoto, Kogi, Kano and others were “because Nigerians are in pains.”
“When things happen, the government will say they don’t know. They are always not aware and are never bothered.”
“When Nigerians are hungry, they don’t lose sleep. The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, will lock down government houses and the federal government would say it was not aware or not bothered.
“We are expecting more states to join us and we pray that they will not be bothered. When we win in 2019, they will not be bothered as well. We are not here to rejoice but to welcome our members and also encourage them to talk to others like them to join us.”
About 50 members of the National Assembly have defected from the ruling APC to other parties. Most of them moved to the PDP.
A week after, Senate President Bukola Saraki also dumped the party for the PDP.
Three other governors have also moved to the PDP. They are Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto.
Some lawmakers have also claimed that more of their colleagues will move over to the PDP in the coming weeks.

“Resign Now, You Don’t Have The Strength To Govern Nigeria” – R-APC Tells President Buhari

The R-APC, has called on President Buhari to resign from office, stating that he doesn’t have the strength to govern Nigeria.
This is coming on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 10-day holdiay to the UK.
The party’s spokesperson, Kassim Afegbua, asked President Buhari to resign as his age can no longer withstand the rigours of governing Nigeria. He said;
“We have said it repeatedly that the president should perish the thought of seeking reelection because Nigerians do not have the patience for this back and forth movement.
The best thing for President Buhari is to take a deserved rest, travel overseas with members of his family, immediate and extended and go and enjoy like one year with all expenses paid for by the government. He should go and rest and recuperate very well.
He should allow us elect a new breed of leadership. The man is not just tired, he is old and no longer strong enough to withstand the rigours of governance in Nigeria.
But because power is a crazy aphrodisiac, everybody want to stay put in power even when they know the competence to discharge their responsibility is no longer there. For Buhari, the strength is no longer there and the nation suffers.”
“You can see it in the widespread insecurity in the country, there is no efficiency in leadership. This country needs a stronger, younger element that can unify us, go around the country and build bridges of understanding and begin the process of healing the wounds in the land.

DEFECTION: Saraki is irrelevant, Buhari will still win re-election— Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State says the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party, was of no consequence.
Okorocha spoke with journalists in Abuja ahead of an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC.
“I don’t see any way it has affected the party negatively and the issue there is that President Muhammadu Buhari will win this election come 2019,” Okorocha said.

“He is much stronger on ground. It (defections) is allowed and as they are going, many people are still coming into the party in their thousands. It is neither here nor there, and we shouldn’t make a big issue out of it.”
Okorocha added that Saraki had the right to chart the course of his political future.
“I wish him good luck,” he said. “The Governor of Kwara my colleague leaves, good luck too. They are all responsible men.”

WHY I QUITTED NATIONAL FOOTBALL- OZIL

Mesut Özil has dramatically quit the national team, declaring: “When we win, I am German. When we lose, I am an immigrant.”
The soccer star Mesut Özil, a midfielder who now plays for Arsenal and helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup, was born in 1988 in Gelsenkirchen, an industrial city in West Germany, a grandchild of Turkish immigrants, and rose to national prominence in a country where few products of immigration do. When he announced in a letter posted on Twitter on Sunday that he was quitting Germany’s national team, citing “racism and disrespect,” he used words that will resonate in Germany for a long time. “When we win, I am German,” he wrote. “When we lose, I am an immigrant.”
Within hours, the tweet to his 23 million followers opened a ferocious debate in Germany—about racism, about anti-Muslim sentiment, about whether the German model of integration, however one defined it, was “a myth” or had failed; about dual nationality, even about dual loyalty (a term not used lightly in Germany)—as well as about soccer sportsmanship and the management of this year’s German national team, which placed out of this year’s World Cup in early stages, a fate some right-wing German soccer fans took to the internet to blame on Özil. In his letter, he said he was tired of being a scapegoat.
“I have two hearts, one German and one Turkish,” Özil wrote in his statement. That he, a member of the second generation of his family to be born in Germany, even had to qualify this tells you a lot about the current state of affairs in Germany and other European countries. For their own historical reasons, Germany, France, Italy, and other continental countries do not tend to embrace the American “melting pot” model or even the British post-colonial multicultural model. Instead, they have more rigid definitions of national identity, which often make it difficult for products of immigration to embrace multiple cultures at once—as we saw last week in the tiff between Trevor Noah and the French ambassador to the United States, who took grave offense at Noah’s joking of France’s multiethnic team that “Africa won the World
But the Özil case is different and in many ways more fraught, and goes beyond the problematic “good immigrant” versus “bad immigrant” categories he cited in his letter. His resignation did not come out of the blue. Nor did the accusations of dual loyalty. They capped months of controversy that began in May when Özil and another German soccer player of Turkish origins, İlkay Gündoğan, posed for a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the run-up to the Turkish national elections in June in which 1.4 million Turks residing in Germany were eligible to vote. German soccer authorities asked Özil to apologize, saying he’d overstepped the boundaries of sportsmanship. The German branch of PEN, the literary and free-speech organization, asked him to speak out against the human-rights violations and the imprisonment of thousands of academics, journalists, and writers in Turkey on Erdoğan’s watch. Özil refused. The German soccer association then began sanctioning him.
Özil wrote in his letter of resignation, “For me, having a picture with President Erdoğan wasn’t about politics or elections. It was about me respecting the highest office of my family’s country.” But that seems willfully naive at best. “Imagine if the most important baseball player in the worst period of Castro took a picture with Castro. What would they say?” the German novelist Gila Lustiger, a member of German PEN, told me. “At least say that Castro is a dictator,” she added. “He could have said, ‘I took a picture with Erdoğan but I’m for freedom of speech and I don’t think homosexuals should go to prison.’ But he didn’t want to do that.” The German boxer Ünsal Arik, also of Turkish heritage, told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung he thought Özil had erred in snapping the photo with Erdoğan. “Özil still doesn’t understand what he has done,” Arik told the paper. “He helped a man with blood on his hands in an election campaign. In any other country that would have generated as much clamor as it did in Germany. And rightly so.”
Germany’s relationship with Turkey has become even more fraught of late. The arrival in Germany of 1 million asylum seekers in 2015, most of them Syrians transiting through Turkey, has contributed to a rise in far-right sentiment in Germany. It has also led to Merkel striking a deal in March of 2016 in which Germany gave Turkey funding in exchange for Turkey capping the number of asylum seekers leaving its borders. And Merkel’s coalition government almost cracked this month when the interior minister, Horst Seehofer, the head of a Bavarian right-wing party, threatened to resign over differences about how to handle migration. He insisted on creating “transit camps” to hold would-be arrivals at the German-Austrian border and deport them if it was found they had already applied for asylum elsewhere in Europe.
After Özil announced his resignation, a spokeswoman for Merkel took the “good immigrant” line and said that the chancellor admired Özil and everything he did as a role model for integration, that she respected his decision to quit the national team and believed others should respect it, too. The president of FC Bayern München took the “bad immigrant” line: he accused Özil of resigning because he hadn’t been playing well.
On Tuesday, the front page of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had an above-the-fold cartoon showing Seehofer beneath a title that reads “Germany Thanks You,” with a thought bubble coming out of his head that reads: “Of course I will provide our formerly deserving national team player Özil the soccer field in the courtyard of one of our new transit centers for his farewell match.” Later the same day, Erdoğan expressed his support for Özil, and criticized the “racist” behavior of some Germans. The ironies here run very deep, and won’t be sorted out any time soon.
